The Stacey Y Band is a great upcoming band from Toronto, Canada consisting of Stacey Y (Keyboard and Vocals), Tom Hanley (Guitar), Mark Rynkun (Bass) and George Nikolov (Drums). Since checking out some of the Stacey Y Band’s latest material and music videos we were really keen to interview them for Song Revelation. Read the entire in-depth interview below where Stacey tells us all about how she initially became interested in music, what current artists she is listening to and what we can expect from the Stacey Y band over the coming months.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
A creative musical journey with a tight groove and soulful female vocals.
Q: What is your musical background?
I was raised on Ukrainian folk and classical music. After coming to Canada, I got heavily into soul and r&b. The other members have a heavy rock background, and we all have bachelor degrees in jazz performance.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
Crazy. After graduating from Humber College for music last year, we’ve all been getting used to the lifestyle of a struggling professional musician. Overall, it’s been really fun and extremely busy. This year, I’ve mostly been focusing onfinishing up my debut album. It’s been a crazy ride, but it’s now out! The album is on iTunes, Amazon, and staceyy.bandcamp.com!
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Otis Redding, Etta James, Stevie Wonder…
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Erykah Badu, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, D’Angelo…
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
‘I Tried’ by a local Toronto artist Maylee Todd.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
I come up with a song and bring it to the band. Together we tweak it, arrange it, and make it tight. Everyone bring something new to the table, so it’s usually a very fun creative session.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
As a keyboardist primarily, I will have to say melody. A good melody always catches my attention and resonates with me all day.
Q: Where are you based?
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
Toronto is a busy multi-cultural city. There are gazillions of fantastic bands and events. It’s not easy to make a name for yourself but great for expanding your musical horizons and keeping you on your toes.
Q: What are you currently working on?
We’re working on promoting the release of our album ‘Set The Water Straight’, which was released on June 20th, 2013 at C’est What in Toronto. You can check out the full-length record at www.staceyy.bandcamp.com.
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
Opening for Jimmy Smith at The Phoenix Concert Theatre with the reggae band I play with – Kidd Rasta &The Peacemakers.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?
I’m hoping to achieve some recognition for the original album. I also plan to keep playing with all the other cool projects I’m invested in, and see where the wind takes me!
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
You can find our latest tour dates on staceyy.com under ‘shows’.
Q: What do you do to relax?
I like watching movies, going out to see shows, or hanging out with friends and band-members after a gig.
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
Go out and play with people and network, but don’t ever stop learning and working on your craft.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Apart from the Stacey Y Band, I also lead a world-fusion project called DoVira. You can check it out on www.doviramusic.com
