The Lauren Wolf Band consists of Lauren Wolf (Lead Vocals), Patrick Dugan (Guitar/Vocals), Mervin Dimailig (Drums/Vocals) and Bill Marzano (Bass) from Chicago, Illinois. They are our latest Sonicbids feature artist winner and at Song Revelation we’re really looking forward to introduce them to you. Read the entire interview below where they discuss their musical background, what they’ve recently been working on and what they do to relax.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Janis Joplin + Jimi Hendrix + Just Enough 2013 To Make it Current
Q: What is your musical background?
The four of us come from all different musical backgrounds and upbringings. However, the thing that seems to tie us together is our love for rock/blues. We all have a sense of what makes your soul feel good. Lauren (lead vocals/songwriter) grew up listening to everything from musical theatre to classic rock to soul/R&B. So, her love of musicians range from Janis Joplin to Better Midler to Earth, Wind, and Fire. Patrick (guitar/vocals/songwriter) grew up as a trained multi-instrumentalist and his true love lies in the blues and with classic blues/rock artists like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Bill (bass) as well has a deep appreciation for the blues but his twist is a bit more jam/rock like Phish and artists like Susan Tedeschi. Rounding out the band is Mervin (drums) coming from a pop/rock and R&B vibe.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
Well, Patrick and Lauren have been with the band since the inception of The Lauren Wolf Band. So, the last year is actually when we added Mervin and Bill to the picture. Having said that, the year has been quite great. We finally found the missing pieces to our band and musical family. The four of us have a certain chemistry that everyone searches for when looking for bandmates. We know how to have fun but we also know when to work hard. We genuinely respect and like one another that we have learned is most important when searching for a group that will last beyond talent and/or charisma.
Over the last year since the four of us have been together we have won Live Nation’s Battle of The Bands beating out 150+ bands nationwide (USA), we have played an unforgettable show at House of Blues Chicago, hit the stage at Metro Chicago, done many interviews, been featured in publications, started to tour together, and have written over half our second album which we plan on recording in October of this year. Sure we have had our bumps and minor setbacks like most artists, but we keep persevering together for the hopes that we will keep growing individually as musicians that will ultimately strengthen us a band.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Cumulatively the four of us are inspired by so many past and current artists. I also think we have family and musician friends who inspire us to be better people and musicians. Some of our broad range of inspirations come from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Phish, The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Magic Sam, Eric Clapton, Susan Tedeschi, Sass Jordan, Eva Cassidy, Whitney Houston, Heart, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, The Cure, Queen, The Black Crowes, and the list could go on for days….
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
We mentioned some above but bands/artists who come from that true raw rock or blues vibe seem to inspire us as a band. People/groups like Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, The Black Keys, Danielia Cotton, Eric Clapton, Gary Clark Jr, Robert Cray, Melissa Etheridge, Lenny Kravitz, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Mumford and Sons, The Black Crowes, and so many more.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Sure!!! Any of the above!!
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
Smotherin’ Me (Imelda May), Guilty Good Intentions (Filligar), Spiderwebs (No Doubt), Rosanna (Toto), Don’t Owe You A Thang (Gary Clark Jr), The Modern Leper (Frightened Rabbit), Sometimes Salvation (The Black Crowes), Ashes and Wine (A Fine Frenzy), Old Man (Neil Young)
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Usually Lauren will be inspired by something or will come up with a tune. Normally the tune or hook will come to her first and she will work on the lyrics from there. Then she will take it to Patrick who will either help with the tune or come up with a hook completely from an idea. Sometimes our manager, Adam will write lyrics too. For instance, our song “The Night The Sound Went Out” came from Adam’s words and then Patrick came up with the tune with help from Lauren. Then once the song has a skeleton worked out we take it to Bill and Mervin who will fill out the rest of the song and give it life.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
They are both equally important. Lyrics give meaning to a song and the melody embraces and passes on the feeling to the artist and the audience.
Q: Where are you based?
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
Well, Chicago is an incredible music town. Especially for rock/blues artists such as ourselves. The blues is the heart of the city but there are a huge amount of indie artists from all musical genres here.
Q: What are you currently working on?
We are working on our next album and touring more. Right now we are about 7 or 8 songs into the second album and by the fall we are hoping to expand that to right around 15 songs. We want the next album to be all originals with possibly one cover.
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
It is hard to pinpoint one thing because a highlight can be something personal or simple as being proud of a song. As a band we are probably most proud of how hard our fans pulled for us to win Live Nation’s Battle of The Bands in 2012. It was not so much the win as much as how many people we saw fight for us to succeed in coming out on top. People from all over the country and even the world reached out to us and voiced how much they wanted us to take top prize. It was what Patrick describes as “the little contest that could”.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
To finish the sophomore album, tour to more cities, continue writing, grow and hone our style, network more, reach out to markets and people we have not tried to reach yet, discover and support new artists (especially local), make at least one more “official” music video, and maybe collaborate or open for a band we look up to.
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
We will playing a lot of shows over the summer, but our next touring show is in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, June 15th at Wilbert’s. It should be a fantastic time. It is our own night there and it starts around 10 pm. So if you or anyone you know lives in the area please send them our way.
Q: What do you do to relax?
Watch movies, listen to other artist’s music, read, workout, chill with friends and family, ride bikes, play ultimate Frisbee, go out for a nice dinner, and chill with our animals.
Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?
Probably have to say all over Europe so we can check out the music scene that we don’t get to experience over in America. Especially the not so mainstream music we might not get introduced to over here.
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
Listen to artists you admire but stay true to yourself. Constantly find ways to evolve so you can grow for yourself and your audience.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
We would like to thank songrevelation.com for contacting us and having the belief in Indie bands such as ourselves. It is so important in this day and age to have support like this. Please listen and spread the word about The Lauren Wolf Band if you like what you hear. Your stamp of approval is the best advertising we can get.
Editor’s Note: The Lauren Wolf Band’s eclectic mix of talents create something instantly memorable, having that commercial rock / blues edge to a tee.
