Arielle Puuri is an upcoming singer and performer from Lansing, MI. After checking out some of Arielle’s folk-inspired songs on soundcloud we got in touch and were delighted when, despite her hectic schedule, she agreed to complete an interview with Song Revelation. Read on to find out Arielle’s musical inspirations, what she’s recently been doing and what she does to relax when not working.
Q: What is your musical background?
I majored in Commercial Voice in LCC for a little while, then dropped out to pursue music in other directions. I am a worship leader at my church, Journey Life Church. Have been singing on a worship team, or as a part of a choir since I was a little girl.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
Great! So much has happened in such a short amount of time! A year ago, I was thinking it would be cool to record some of my music sometime! And now I’m pursuing it! It’s awesome!
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Ooh! This is so hard! Maybe Colbie Caillat and Ingrid Michaelson. If my music sounds like a lovechild of theirs then it’s exactly how I want it to be. Also Taylor Swift because she is SO underrated, or appreciated for all the wrong reasons. Her Lyrics are fantastic at times. “You call me on the phone, just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest. I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here cause I remember it all too well.” So good.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Well Same as the question before but Kina Grannis, Blind Pilot, The Good Mad, Ingrid Michaelson, Colbie Caillat, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato(that girl can SANG), Matt Nathanson, Matthew Perryman Jones, Bryan and Katie Torwalt, All Son and Daughters, Andrew Belle,Katie Herzig, I could go on all day! My favorite artists, are the ones who can take everything they are feeling and then translate it into a song, and then when you listen to it, it somehow gets translated back into feeling.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
All of the above!
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
Well my favorite song of the day is The Boat Song by J.J Heller, because it’s so happy, Thinking of You by The Good Mad is equally as happy. Alive by all Sons and daughters, Kiss me Ed Sheeran, We’ll be Okay by Imaginary Friend, What A Pity by Right Away Great Captain, New York by Blind Pilot, Little Deschutes by Laura Veirs, Only You By Matthew Perryman Jones! Ah my everyday playlist is like 100 songs, this could take all day! I just discovered October By The Crane Wives The other day, and I’m definitely into that song too!
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
There really is no process. I will be out somewhere staring at a fire, and then lyrics come to my head, so I rush to a piano and start creating a melody. OR It will be the opposite, I’ll create the melody in my head while I’m in the shower and then start winging words and then try and figure out the chords later on. OR if you’re memory lane, I will just pick up a guitar and start playing and singing you, without even realizing I’m writing a song.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
Ooooh To me it’s easy! Lyrics, lyrics lyrics. If the song has the blandest melody, but great lyrics, I will love it. At the same time… the melody is what you’re going to be humming everywhere you go if it’s catchy.
Q: Where are you based?
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
Cold… Right now it’s so cold. In the summer it’s so humid. But we do have BEAUTIFUL autumns.
There is also nothing to do basically ever. So when we’re bored it’s like…bowling or a movie. Or Vampire Diaries Marathons!
Q: What are you currently working on?
Getting better at guitar and piano so that I can play with a ton of songs I’ve written and get the sound I want out of them!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
Well seeing as how my career just started, I just enjoy performing and all the people I get to meet! When I opened up for A Silent Film, it was super rad, cause they’re british. I’m pretty sure they were the only British people I’ve ever met. Surprisingly, not all british people are wizards who go to Hogwarts. Who would have thought!
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
I’m not exactly sure. I just always want to be singing! I love being on stage! I love meeting new people! I love laughing! So If I’m doing all that in 12 months I’m good! But ideally, recording a full length album would be sweet.
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
I took a little break due to crazy schedule for a couple months and my first show back will be March 9 at the Loft! I’m opening up for The Crane Wives! They are folky and pretty great!
Q: What do you do to relax?
Drink tea. I’m obsessed. I always need to be drinking tea. Also, listening to music helps. Also, I have this unhealthy addiction to dramatic television shows. I try to quit, but I always relapse. SO when I am not trying to break the habit, that relaxes me too! The Vampire Diaries, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Prison Break, Smallville, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, I could go on all day. I’m also a photographer, so I like to go out and shoot nature sometimes, and I find that to be rewarding as well.
Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?
Anywhere in Italy!! And France! I love food, music, fashion, history, and art. Come on! Obvious.
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
I don’t think I’m really in the place to give advice, but HAVE FUN! If you aren’t enjoying what you’re doing then it isn’t worth it. Life is short. Embrace it!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
There’s this guy named Joe, Who I’m crazy about. Also I have a cat(artie) and a dog(izzie), Both named after television characters. Also I like feathers and flowers and happy things, like nature and animals!!
