The Como Brothers Band are from Long Island, NY and are Song Revelation’s latest Sonicbids competition winner. The Como Brothers Band consists of Matt Como (Bass & Vocals), Andrew Como (Guitar and Vocals), Tim Costello (Keyboards and Vocals), and Justin Scheidling (Drums). The guys are currently working hard to release their latest EP, “Still Waters” and we were therefore delighted when Matt took a few minutes to be interviewed by Song Revelation. Read on to discover how they became interested in music, what they’ve recently been working on and what it’s like to live in Long Island, NY!
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
The band is influenced by a variety of pop, rock, blues, good songwriting, etc. Music is our life.
Q: What is your musical background?
We have been surrounded by music from a very young age. My dad and his brothers are all very musical. During family parties they were always all jamming. Andrew and I always wanted to join in so that’s when we started playing. In elementary school Andrew was involved in concert band playing the alto saxophone and he also played guitar. When he was in high school he played the tenor saxophone in symphonic band. I played guitar and bass. Then we started singing and writing songs. We did not really start taking our music seriously until high school when we started playing the local bar circuit. We really had a lot of fun and noticed that people really liked it too. At that point we decided that we would like to de this as a career because this is our passion. We love making and playing music. After we were writing music for a while “The Speed of Sound EP” was created.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
2012 was definitely an exciting year for us. We were selected by the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands and performed at The Warped Tour at Nassau Coliseum 7/21. We played Nikon Jones Beach Theater Side Stage opening for Rachel Crow, Cody Simpson, and Big Time Rush. During our set, Kayla Stockert performed two original songs that we co-wrote /recorded with her. We a played at Six Flags Great Escape in Lake George, NY. We were named Emerging Artists by S&IS Shortcut to Sony, were finalist in The Hard Rock Rising Contest, played at the Montauk Music Festival. We had our music played on MTV’s Real World St. Thomas and on the E! Network’s Keeping up with the Kardashians.
We played live in Manhattan NY a lot at places like The Bitter End and The National Underground. In February 2012, we played at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square. We also performed all around Long Island at bars, town events, charity fundraising events, and festivals. Overall I think we played around 40 gigs.
In October we released an EP with Kayla Stockert, a 15-year-old singer/songwriter. We wrote two songs on that record for her and one we co-wrote with her. We released a music video for the song What They Say we did with her that’s now on YouTube. That EP, Castles In The Sand, is now on iTunes.
Here is a link to the music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04dMROEYk0c
And while all this was going on we recorded a new 4 song EP that we’re releasing in March AND our first 12 song full-length album. A busy year to say the least.
Q: Who inspires you musically? / Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Really we just want to be ourselves and carve out of own sound and place in the music world. That being said we were always inspired by The Beatles and the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. We love the blues BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Freddy King, Hendrix & Stevie Ray. Amy Winehouse, Dave Grohl and the Foo’s. Maroon 5. John Mayer was huge for us.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Our dream is to collaborate with John Mayer. He is such an awesome songwriter and his guitar playing just can’t be described. Absolutely this would be our top collab goal.
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I am listening to As Tall As Lions “Ghosts of York” and Gary Clark Jr. “Bright Lights”.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Andrew and I will sit by ourselves and noodle around on guitar until we’ve made a cool melody/chord progression that we can show each other. Sometimes we write most of it alone, other times if we’re stuck we write it together. It always ends up being a collaboration between Andrew and I. We know when to throw out the bad ideas and continue working on the good ones. It’s a process of revision until we end up with a song we’re happy with.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
They’re both very important. I’d have to side with melody if I was forced to choose one. We always have started our songwriting with melody and done lyrics after. Without a melody lyrics are nothing. That being said, clever lyrics can enhance a melody. So I don’t think it’s a war between them – I see them working together to get the best result.
Q: Where are you based?
We are born and raised New Yorkers. We grew up in Eastern Long Island and currently live there. We are very fortunate to be so close to New York City so we can play out in the city a lot.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
We get the best of both worlds. We live in a suburban community on Long Island that is a quaint little harbor town. It is always a lot of fun to go hang out in town with your friends. We also have New York City which is the capital of the world there is always something to do there year round and that’s about an hour and a half to two hours drive but it’s accessible. It’s exciting to be able to play in the city and be part of the action.
Q: What are you currently working on?
Right now we are finishing up our EP “Still Waters” which is scheduled to be out March 5th 2013. . The first song “Parachute” is available for sale on Reverbnation. Simultaneously we are finishing recording our first full length 12 song album at VuDu Studios in Port Jefferson, NY. We have a total of 16 new songs that we just finishing up recording/producing.
The songs from EP “Still Waters” are our older ones that were actually written after The Speed of Sound. Our full-length album will have our newest songs. It is actually interesting to listen to all of the songs because we can hear our progression. We have done these two projects entirely funded by ourselves so it has been hard work but very exciting. I can’t wait for everyone to hear all of them. Thanks for supporting our music.
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
The highlight of our career to date was definitely be chosen in The Ernie Ball Battle of the Band to play at the Warped Tour in Nassau Coliseum. We also had a great time playing at Nikon Jones Beach Amphitheatre Side Stage before Cody Simpson and Big Time Rush. It was awesome playing in front of such a large crowd.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
With our EP and album finished we would really like to start getting out there touring and performing. We want everyone to hear our music. We would love to also do a radio tour.
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Our first show of 2013 is going to be with Kayla Stockert on Feb 16, 2013. We are going to be opening for Jillian Jensen from XFactor and Kingsfoil – Featuring Frankie Muniz. That will be open to All Ages. We are also very excited that on March 4 we will be performing for Balcony TV Charleston that is awesome. While we are in South Carolina we will be performing/interviewed by WXRY 93.3 FM Radio at the British Bulldog Pub in Columbia South Carolina. If you are in South Carolina come see us!
Q: What do you do to relax?
We hang out with our close friends in town. We eat, go to movies, just relax and have fun.
Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?
Oh we would love to be on a beautiful tropical island relaxing on the beach with crystal clear water. The Palm Trees would be swaying in the warm breeze and we would be totally enjoying our surroundings. Any vacation on the beach sounds good to me! [laughs]
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
Don’t give up and don’t get discouraged from people saying no to your music. Enjoy each step of the way. Know deep inside what you want to do and work hard to make it happen. Definitely follow your dream. Dream Big!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
