Sarah D is an Australian singer and dancer who is currently living and working in Los Angeles. At Song Revelation we discovered Sarah D’s work through social media and really wanted to share it with you. Despite her increasingly hectic schedule we were delighted that she was keen to be interviewed by Song Revelation. Read the full, in-depth, interview below where Sarah D discusses, amongst other things, her creative collaborations, what she’s hoping to achieve over the next 12 months and where here ideal vacation destination would be.
Q: Who are you called?
My name is Sarah Dokowicz but I go by the stage name, Sarah D. I figure my Polish last name is way too much for some people so I like to keep it simple 😉
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
You can best describe my music as a sassy blend of Pop/ Rock enveloped in cheerful, dance-friendly beats and synths.
Q: What is your musical background?
I’ve been singing and dancing since I was 9 years old. I always knew I wanted to pursue some sort of career in entertainment. It wasn’t until I was about 14 that I started taking my singing more seriously. I was regularly gigging in my hometown but I still felt like I wanted more of a challenge for myself. So I packed my bags and came to LA where I studied at Musician’s Institute. It was THEN I realized music, (singing and writing in particular) was the one thing I wanted to do. I’ve also taken up guitar to assist me with my writing process.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
The last 12 months have been a really huge journey for me. I graduated from music school and recorded my debut EP, ‘Over You’, produced by Colombian producer, Andres Torres. I had a really successful release party where I had many sponsors on board including: Vito Esposito Salon, Republic Of Pie, AMC Theatres, Amoeba Music and Outback Steakhouse. I also started a GO FUND ME page where a whole bunch of my fans donated over $2,000 to help with the release of my party. Additionally, I won the 2012 VocalizeU Art Intensive scholarship where I was blessed to work with some great artists and musicians and recorded a song which appeared in the opening credits for an independent feature film. I am so grateful for all the achievements I’ve accomplished thus far and the people who have been supporting me along the way!! It gives me a purpose to wake up everyday!
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Musically, my songs are steered towards the genres of Pop/Rock with a prominent dance element; which has been added for that radio friendly, commercial sound. Having said that, my musical sounds have been inspired and influenced by the new sounds of Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Jessie J. From a writing perspective, I gravitate again to the lyrics of artists like Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Sara Bareilles and Jessie J.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
I look up to so many artists!!! However, I particularly look up to the King Of Pop himself, Michael Jackson along with Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Pink, Jessie J and Kelly Clarkson. I love the fact that these artists love to put themselves out of the box and give themselves challenges with their music and vocal and stage performances.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
There are SO many people I’d love to collaborate with! From writers to producers and artists. Some of those on the top of my list include, Greg Kurstin, Max Martin and Shellback, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk,, Jessie J and Bonnie McKee. If I would be able to work with even half of these talented individuals, my life would be complete!
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I’m listening to the new Bruno Mars album! I’m quietly in love with it and can listen to for days! I’m just a bit upset that it’s so short….
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
I create in different ways however, initially I try to create a concept and title first and then work on the melody and lyrics from there. I feel when a song is constructed this way, it has a clear and direct path of where I’d like to go with it.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
Though both are really important to me, melody will always be a little more concentrated on for me. People often recognize melodies before they memorize lyrics, therefore it’s vital that a good song contains a well thought, simple yet original melody anyone can remember!
Q: Where are you based?
I was born in Adelaide, Australia but moved to LA in 2010 to study and have been here since working hard and working on my craft.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
Australia has a music scene of it’s own. It has some really great Pop, Dance and Indie artists and it’s kind of sad that America doesn’t know about them as they’re really quite great! L Where I’m from specifically, (Adelaide) I’m happy to say we’ve had some great musicians and artists come out of there including: Guy Sebastian, Orianthi and Sia. For me, however, I want to stay in the States and pursue my dreams and aspirations here!!!
Q: What are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m working on building my own press and promotion for the recent release of my debut EP, which has been going well. I’ve been getting a number of features and interviews on various radio stations, and online and paper publications which can be viewed on my website!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
The highlight has been definitely putting my EP together. It’s been a great journey and learning experience writing the EP and managing myself. I’ve learnt how to approach businesses, how to negotiate and above all be honest with people. Especially when it came to working with my producer, Andres Torres. We had to be so honest with each other in order to create the best possible product we could both be proud of!
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
In the next 12 months, I would really love to book more shows with my band and work on writing more music for a debut album that I want to start recording in the coming year of two. Additionally, I’d like to get a manager who can help point me in the right direction and make my creative visions come alive!
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
There will be a number of shows (both acoustic and full band) that I’ll be doing in the new year which can be viewed on my website! Stay tuned!
Q: What do you do to relax?
To relax, (though I don’t relax too much) I love to read, hike, watch movies or hang with friends.
Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?
I’d love to go somewhere with great beaches, like Hawaii!! Growing up in my city, I lived 5 minutes away from the beach and it played such an important role in my life as this was where I could relax and gather my thoughts by the water. It’s a place where I can feel most at peace.
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
If you’re going to do anything, do it big and with all your heart. I never like to think about my plan B, cause my plan B is to make plan A work; so all my energy is focused on that one thing. The biggest thing is to be SPECIFIC and know exactly what you want out of your career and be consistent about doing things everyday to get closer to those goals. It’s a long journey, but if you’re up for the challenge, anything is possible!!!
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Many people don’t know that I used to consider myself a ‘dancer’ before I started focusing on my music, so I always like to share my videos that I’ve choreographed, such as this one:
Editor’s Note: Sarah has great stage presence which definitely adds to her catchy, well-developed pop songs. We’re looking forward to her new tracks with mushc anticipation and Song Revelation.
