Artist Interview – Lachi

Lachi is a singer-songwriter and performer from NYC and is our latest Sonicbids competition winner. Lachi has already opened for some pretty incredible acts and after checking out some of her work we realised why. Read the full in depth interview below where Lachi discusses her current career highlgiths, what she’s hoping to achieve next year and how she became interested in music initially.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

An NYC based soul-infused pop-rock singer-songwriter with a positive message.

Q: What is your musical background?

I am self taught on piano and guitar, imitating what I would hear on the TV and Radio and applying that to songwriting.  I took a semester of classical voice lessons in college as well.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last twelve months contained a combination of raising funds for the upcoming album at the end of 2011, to recording the new album throughout 2012.  It’s been a year of much work and progress.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Apart from Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Yanni, I grew up listening to the Beatles, Radiohead, Smashing Pumkins, Fiona Apple, Sublime…

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I admire Pink.  She’s got a consistently good music, a good message and great energy.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I am interested in collaborating with more urban artists and allowing pop, rock and urban to come together to form a synergetic off spring with a sonic sum greater than its parts.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to sum dub-step these days.  Deadmau5 is currently at the top of my list for Dubstop / Club Mix music.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Often the hook comes first, perhaps in the shower, on the bus, at a party, as I’m walking to the subway.  The rest of the song revolves around and grows from the hook.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

To the masses, melody is more important, something catchy and hooky.  To the songwriter, it’s usually about the story-line, the comples lyrics and how they intertwine with the melody.

Q: Where are you based?

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

NYC is where people come to “live.”  The city is very organic and constantly moving.

Q: What are you currently working on?

The next album to be released 2013. “Make Some Noise”.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

My band and I have opened for Patti LaBelle at Pridefest Milwaukee; we’ve opened for Questlove (The Roots) at Brooklyn Academy of Music; we’ve performed on the CW and have had are music played on national TV and Radio.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Release the next album and make an even greater sonic impact.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I play the guitar or the piano idly.  Sometimes songs are born here as well.  I exercise or take a bath to relax also.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I’ve always wanted to go to Australia.  I’ve been to Europe and Africa already, and would want to encounter a very different culture with species and customs only present to its locale, but also be able to get around and enjoy the different comforts.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Be good to people.  It goes a long way.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Please look out for “Make Some Noise” releasing early 2013, and check out the title track single “Make Some Noise” already out on iTunes, Amazon, eMusic and all other online stores!  Be the change you wish to see!

Editor’s Note: Lachi has a voice like silk that also combines great variation and dynamicism. This sits atop some great instrumental work. Definitely one to watch!
