Katrin The Thrill is a singer songwriter from Athens and creates an appealing dark Indie Rock Sound. When we first checked out some of Katrin’s material at Song Revelation we were really impressed and were happy when she agreed to complete a full feature interview with us. Read on to find out about what Katrin has recently been working on, how she creates some of her tracks and what it’s like living in Athens.
Q: Who are you called?
Katrin the Thrill. In 2007 I participated in the Coca Cola Soundwave Music Contest using Katrin the Thrill as a funny nickname, but after winning a place among the five best music acts I decided to hold on to it.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
For me music is basically the expression of feelings and emotions, but if you want a description that would be three words: Dark Indie Rock
Q: What is your musical background?
Music was always in my life. Even as a toddler I would perform “concerts” for my family. When I look back in myself there is one characteristic that never changes, and that’s me singing… I went to study “Popular Music & Performing” in England and then I got a degree and worked as a sound engineer. The way I approach music is instinctual and sentimental. I just lose myself in it and let everything else go.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
The last 12 months have been really busy and creative for me. I recorded my new album, which is now ready to be released. In the meanwhile my first EP “Earth Is Calling us” has gained excellent reviews. The EP is dedicated to the earth and the environment and part of the profits were used towards reforestation. In January our aim was accomplished and we managed to complete our first reforestation with success. This was a really inspiring experience.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Lately I get inspired from the classics and especially classical piano compositions. I was never into classical music until recently, that I have started to study the piano and discovered the greatness of Chopin, Bach and Debussy. Of course there are many others, I absolutely love music, I wouldn’t know where to start…
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
I always wanted to be the voice in a Massive Attack song and sing a duet with Tom Yorke.
Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment my iPod is full of the Pixies albums, ‘cause they definitely make my day and also the album Modern Celibacy of my really good friends Berlin Brides.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
I usually play the guitar, or sometimes the piano and then I come up with a voice melody and lyrics. Writing music is an absolute need of expression; thoughts and feelings that manifest as melodies and songs.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
I would say both.
Q: Where are you based?
I am based in Athens, Greece at the moment.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
It is really difficult at the moment. Greece is a wonderful country, but the last couple of years we are having a major political, financial and social crisis. Our democracy has been abolished and our political system has been corrupted. But on the other hand the whole world is on a crisis. For me this is a chance for humanity to realize and focus on what is important. We are all connected and therefore need to understand that our personal benefit is to care for the common benefit.
Q: What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on releasing my new album.
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
I always believe that the best are yet to come.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
My main priority for the next 12 months is to release my new album and tour in Europe, US and Canada.
Q: What do you to relax?
I drink valerian roots and I practice on my breathing. Singing makes me relax as well, playing music and especially the piano.
Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?
My favorite winter vacations would be anywhere that I could snowboard. In the summer I definitely prefer to be somewhere in the Greek islands, they are unique and they provide endless possibilities of fun and relaxation. I am also dreaming of a road trip in the US.
Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
A little piece of advice, which derives from a song that I have written, is “Dreams come true if you really believe”.
