Eric Ness is an upcoming songwriter and performer from London. Despite Eric Ness’ constant work to promote his music, we were really happy when he agreed to be interviewed by Song Revelation so we could share everything with you. Read the full in-depth interview below where Eric discusses, amongst other things, what he’s currently working on, what he’s hoping to achieve over the next 12 months and what other artists he enjoys listening to.
Q: Who are you called?
Every now and again I hear “you sound like….” after a gig. I’ve never heard the same name twice though, so I guess it varies a lot from gig to gig? People have mentioned John Mayer and Paulo Nutini and a bunch of other names I’d never heard of before.
Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or a number of genres what would it be?
I think contemporary pop with a strong jazz influence would be the best way to describe my music most of the time. Other times it’ll be more countryified, bluegrassified, latinofied, rockabillyfied and other types of fied’s.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Eric Ness, Pop Jazz, Singer, Party time, happy days, organic, el naturale, peace & love – but not in a hippie kinda way.
Q: What is your musical background?
I picked up the guitar at the age of 9 because I wanted to become a rock star. I didn’t really like playing the guitar, but for some weird reason I kept at it. A few years later I got really into it and I started playing in bands. My first band didn’t have a singer, so I stepped up and gave it my best, which was terrible. I couldn’t sing to save my own life.. but I for one, really enjoyed it so I kept singing, writing songs and playing in bands. One time I even got a review in a magazine saying something like “The singer is so horrible, that It’s a relief when he shuts up for instrumental breaks”, but that didn’t stop me. The years went by and I slowly picked up as a singer, and my songs got a little better and one day I decided to “go for it” so I moved to London to pursue a career in music. Maybe not the smartest decision, but definitely no regrets.
Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
It was cool. Both years have been great! Got my first reviews, which were mostly extremely positive – that was fun. Played some amazing gigs and festivals. Highlights: Got the current line-up together. Toured USA from West to East where we recorded in Sun Studios; where my all time hero Elvis Presley was discovered. Went jamming in a park in Berlin where a crowd of about 100 people turned up to dig us after about 20 minutes. Made my first radio appearance. Bought a new microphone.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
The collab part is already where I want it with my band. They’re all extremely talented and just right, so I wouldn’t wanna tamper with that. It’s magic. On the gig front though, I’d love to be on the bill with people like Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Darwin Deez and Ed Harcourt.
Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?
Here’s a few for my different musical cravings: Elisabeth Cotton – Babe it Ain’t No Lie. Lonnie Donegan – Nobody’s Child. Elvis Presley – Blue Moon of Kentucky. Strapping Young Lad – Shitstorm. Kings Of Leon – Mary. Pantera – Drag the waters. Rihanna – Man Down. The Chords – Sh’Boom. Aerosmith – Jaded. Etta James – I’d Rather Go Blind.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Play and sing stuff.. random stuff until something hits me. It goes BOOM, then minutes later I have a new song.
Q: Where are you based?
Camden Town, London.
Q: What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on an album which will be my first full-lenght release. I’ve already booked the studio for a couple of months from now, and I’m only gonna have brand new songs on the album. Songs that aren’t written at the moment. Very very exciting and loads of pressure – the good kind.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2012?
Nothing specific. I’m going to be releasing an album in 2012, tour the UK for the first time, and also go on a full-on tour of Europe for the first time. I’m hoping that it will lead to good things.
Q: What do you do to relax?
I’m a very relaxed person, so nothing. I’m relaxing right now – could you tell?
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
YES but I can’t tell them here. It’s too risky!
