Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

“John Mayer meets Nickelback with Eddie van Halen on guitar, but with an Eddie Vedder sensibility.”

On my “one page” this is the 15 sec. elevator “pitch” for my music:

“GREG WOOD, a splash of bluesy-roots inspired rock music, mixed with authentic lyrics about love and lies, shaken with some smokin’guitar, goes down smooth!”

Q: What is your musical background?

Playing guitar since I was 8, the rest is history! For me, everything about songwriting and performing all comes back to the guitar.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

Honestly 2010 felt like spinning tires in the mud. So revved up and ready to go out and give 100% in every way, but things were just not lining up as I had planned. Began recording new album “Greg Wood III” in Fall 2010 though, which renewed my energy and motivation. I love working in the studio with talented musicians, engineers, and producers!

So 2011, got off to a great start continuing in studio recording new songs. Went out on a summer tour with band in Summer 2011 which is always an adventure; playing in bars, clubs, soft-seat theatres, festivals, West Edmonton Mall (world’s largest!), and culminating at BOONSTOCK 2011, performing after “A Perfect Circle” on the final night of the festival. An awesome way to end our tour.

Also some notable acknowledgements of my music in 2011 so far:

Guitar playing was acknowledged early in 2011 with a Top 20 out of 968 finish in Taylor Guitars worldwide song contest; and #11 out of 1099 songs entered in the worldwide Shred or Alive.

BORN TO BE ALONE, LITTLE WHILE, OLD DUSTY ROAD, RAZORBLADES and RIDE ON will be used in THUNDERSTRUCK 10 an Extreme snowmobiling DVD distributed world-wide and featured in premieres throughout North America Fall / Winter 2011. This is my first placement in film!
Also in 2011, Canwest Global Communications featured the song “Wake Up” on “The Playlist” available for download via major newspapers nationwide, alongside Canadian music heavyweights, Johnny Reid & Bryan Adams.

And upcoming later in 2011, “Hope In Her Eyes” will be on “AMAZING” a compilation in support of the Canadian Cancer Society that includes a song by legendary Canadian songwriter Dan Hill.

New album “Greg Wood III” was released August 2011, and is available worldwide via iTunes and through my distributor Indie Pool (

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Everything and everyone. Truly. Inspiration can come from unexpected people and places…..just a matter of being open to inspiration and be aware when it comes to you.

Life inspires me. Mostly I am inspired by other musicians…I am amazed by what they create, how they put their thoughts and music out in the world for others to appreciate. I listen to ALL genres of music, all types of artists from country to classical to reggae to hip-hop to blues to rock, you name it. The fact that I am even capable of creating my own music is in itself an inspiration. I don’t take that ability for granted.

As far as musical influences…“ If I had to pick my top 3 influences would have to say for guitar playing my first influence was Eddie Van Halen definitely. I was inspired to learn “Eruption” before I was even a teenager. Johnny Lee Hooker for my love of the blues. And  absolutely Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, for his persistence… coming from a small Alberta town, writing his own songs, playing guitar, lead singer, his innate business sense, getting his songs on radio at the outset, and most of all for sticking to what he wanted to do with his band  regardless of all the negative press that comes Nickelback’s way. “

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Alter Bridge, Chad Kroeger, Micheal “Elvis” Baskette (producer)

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Alter Bridge, Chad Kroeger, Micheal Baskette.

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

Vinnie Paz “End of Days”, The Black Dahlia Murder, David Guetta.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

No “process” to my art, when it happens I just write it down, cannot be forced.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both! I think melody and lyrics are equally as important, but that being said, one can do without the other if melody or lyrics are strong enough to stand on their own.

Q: Where are you based?

The universe.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Same as it is for everyone, you navigate your surroundings through instinct, and battle with your inner desires and fears.

Q: What are you currently working on?

This interview! :)

Preparing for my CD release party in Edmonton. Getting ready for upcoming live shows / more touring, and also a documentary/ music video type DVD of live show footage. And of course always open to writing new songs, that is eternally ongoing, as the inspiration hits me.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Just being in the recording studio anytime with real pro musicians is where I’m at peace.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

Global fame. Not too much to ask is it? Lol Reminds me, one of the first iTunes songs I ever sold was in Japan! Somehow through the wonder of the internet someone in Japan was one of the very first people to buy one of my songs. Cool.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

Do have CD release party in Canada end of Sept. at the Dungeon in Edmonton. After that watch for Fall – Winter show / tour schedule on my website.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Sometimes I sit down; sometimes I lay down; sometimes I close my eyes.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Something really new! I have an app for iphone and android phones, which is FREE! Link can be found on my website and also on my reverbnation website. Also on both of those sites people can sign up with their e-mail to receive news, free song downloads and other Greg Wood stuff (if you get the app for android or iphone you will automatically get that).

Also I want the readers to know about my fans and how much I truly appreciate them. Thus far, my fans are a diverse group….have the ladies that like the softer ballads, then the younger rocker crowd who like the heavier rock music, older fans who like the bluesy influence and guitar solo work. Basically anyone who appreciates good music – musicians who actually can play their instruments well, and write their own original songs but can also play some covers the fans love too, those are the people loving the music. I am grateful for the support of my fans; I don’t take it for granted. Thank you!
