Artist Interview – Jennings

Jennings is a singer/songwriter based in New York and Nashville. Despite Jennings’ increasingly hectic gig schedule we were delighted when she agreed to complete a feature interview for Song Revelation. Read on to find out about what her current career highlights have been, what she’s hoping to achieve for the rest of the year and what she does to relax when not working on her blossoming music career.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

I would say ” I pack a lot of voice behind my small frame. Like an edgier Sarah McLachlan or Imogen Heap.”  :)

Q: How was 2010 for you?

I was so fun!  It was spent doing a lot of touring, cool shows and finishing up my latest record that I couldn’t be more proud of.  I was able to travel with my wonderful bandmates up and down the east coast, work with some incredible artists in and out of the studio, and I got engaged!  So I guess you would say it was a pretty cool year. :)

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

I have a lot of singer/songwriter friends that have been rotating on my ipod like Rachel Epp, Josh Taylor, and the Shakespeares.  I am also LOVING the new Foo FIghters and Adele albums.  SO AWESOME!

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I would say neither.  It’s very much a symbiotic relationship and I feel that they elevate each other.  A lot of artists say that they either start with lyrics or music but for me it depends.  Most of the time it will start with a hook line or an idea, I will come up with a melody/music to fit that idea and then mold the words into it.  However, at the end of the day, the song wouldn’t not be what it is without both.

Q: Where are you based?

I am based out of both New York City and Nashville.  I split my time between the two.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I have done some really cool stuff from SXSW to opening for Mike Doughty to writing with some major hit writers in NYC but I think the biggest highlight for me is that I am still going strong and able to do my music independently after so long.  I am extremely proud of this latest record, Collapse, Collide.  I was in the studio a ton for 10 hours at a time really making each song exactly what I wanted to be.  I can listen to this record and say there is nothing I would change and that is also HUGE highlight to me.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

WORLD DOMINATION!!  Just kidding.  I just want to keep spreading the word about my music and continue to be able to pursue a career that I genuinely love.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Well, writing and listening to music are probably the most relaxing things for me.  But if I am not doing music, I am a big horror movie buff so I am probably curled up on a couch with popcorn watching the latest slasher film.  That surprises a lot of people but it’s true. :)

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I hope you all like my music and I love talking to music lovers and fans so reach out to me anytime!  You can get all of my info from my website which is  I also give away free downloads so all the more reason to check it out! :)

Editor’s Note: Jennings incredibly expressive and dynamic voice fills the rooms wherever her individual yet commercial music is played. Definitely one of Sing Revelation’s ‘One’s To Watch’.
