Kristin Errett is an Acoustic Pop Singer / Songwriter from Fairfield, close to New York City. After checking out Kristin’s acoustic performances on YouTube we were keen at Song Revelation to offer her a feature interview so that we could share her talent with you. Read the full interview below to find out about how Kristin became interested in music, which modern day artists she’s inspired by and what she’s hoping to achieve for the rest of 2011.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Sitting at a piano in a vintage dress, playing piano-driven, often 70s inspired, acoustic pop, storytelling with tongue and cheek lyrics, I’m a 21 year old musician who can’t imagine doing anything else.
Q: What is your musical background?
I used to do theatre. That’s how I learned to sing. I’ve performed in everything from operas, to straight dramas, to gospel choirs. Growing up, I basically auditioned for any organization I could where I’d have the opportunity to get on a stage. I started taking piano lessons in fourth grade and stuck with it. When I was about 17 I decided to give up theatre to start focusing on songwriting.
Q: How was 2010 for you?
2010 was a great year. I met my production team for “Confessions of a Songbird” which is my new album. I basically spent the second half of the year writing, which was an incredible learning experience.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
I remember stealing “Tapestry” from my dad’s CD collection when I was about nine and just completely fell in love with Carole King. She’s the reason I asked to take piano lessons. Fleetwood Mac has also been another big inspiration to me. In general, I listen to a lot of 70s music. I actually just recently bought a 1973 Fender Rhodes. I think I was probably born in the wrong time.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. I’m in awe of them. I’m seeing them live for the third time this September. To see such talented musicians rising to the rightfully deserved success that they are achieving is inspiring.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
Stevie Wonder. But that’s probably every musician’s dream.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
Every song is different for me so I don’t necessarily have a specific process. I do generally write music first though and I try to write as often as I can, even if I don’t feel inspired. I think that’s important.
Q: Where are you based?
I’m from Fairfield, CT. I travel a lot to perform though.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
It’s a great town. It’s actually where John Mayer grew up. We’re on the water with a lot of nice beaches and great bars to perform at. It’s also an hour train ride to NYC, which is pretty convenient.
Q: What are you currently working on?
I’m shooting a music video in New York this month for “Don’t Call Me Sweetheart”, the first track off my album, which I’m really looking forward to!
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
This past winter, I went to LA to record, “Confessions of a Songbird” at Killingsworth Recording Co. and it was the most exciting experience of my life. I worked with some incredibly talented musicians, writers, and producers who were just such kind and down-to-earth people on top of it. The whole experience seemed unreal. I remember crying in the cab on the way back to the airport.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
Someone told me, “If you don’t play, it’s a wasted day”. So I’m focused on performing as much as I can and I’m hoping for a positive response. I’d be thrilled if by the end of this year, anyone who saw me live and enjoyed my performance tells a friend.
Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Absolutely! On Aug. 7th, I’ll be at The Bitter End in New York, NY, which is one of my favorite venues to perform at. I’ll be playing throughout the New England area this entire month and you can check out the dates on my website at www.kristinerrett.com.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
Sure! If you go to my website and join my mailing list, you’ll receive a free download of “Mr. Imperfect” which is a track off my album. Plus, joining my mailing list is a great way to stay in touch with me and receive more free stuff. It’s win win!!
