In Storybook Fashion is an upcoming pop-rock band from Ontario, Canada and is our latest Sonicbids competition winner. The band consists of Dan Webb (Guitar and Vocals), Grant Morris (Drums) and Dan Ducharme (Bass and Vocals). We were really happy at Song Revelation when Dan and the rest of the guys agreed to complete a feature interview with us so that we could share their music and experiences with you. Read on to discover who inspires them, who they would like to collaborate with given the opportunity and what they’re hoping to achieve for the rest of this year.
Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
Acoustically influenced pop-rock for the masses.
Q: What is your musical background?
I have been playing bass for, I think like 13 years now. I am completely self taught. I’ve never taken a lesson which I think has really helped to define me as a musician. There has been no outside influence on my playing style and that really allows me to just be myself when I play.
Q: How was 2010 for you?
2010 was an excellent year for us. We wrote and recorded our debut EP and shared the stage with bands like Elias and Hail the Villain.
Q: Who inspires you musically?
Today I think what inspires me the most is the other guys in the band. We try to push each other musically past our own personally boundaries and it helps us grow both as individuals and together as a group.
Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?
Ones that aren’t afraid to evolve. I find a lot of bands now a days have trouble evolving their sound as they mature. When you get older you grow and change in a lot of ways and so do your influences, so of course inevitably the sound of your music will to. I look up to bands who can find the happy medium between who they once were and where they are now.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
We would love to play with bands like Marianas Trench, Hedley, Three Days Grace…. Any big, prominent Canadian band.
Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?
Lol. I don’t actually even own an I pod but the CD player in my car has Masterpiece Theatre by Marianas Trench in it right now.
Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
It all usually starts with us sitting in a room with and acoustic guitar. We’ll just play until we find some chords we like or a riff or something and then build it from there. We’ll add a verse, chorus, lyrics, basically write pretty much the whole thing on an acoustic. Than we take it to our jam space and add drums, bass, and swap the acoustic for an electric. That’s where we really fine tune everything and add back ups and leads and all the pretty stuff. Then we’ll tighten everything up try it out at a show.
Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
Lyrical content is something that is really important, but melody is what can make or break a song.
Q: Where are you based?
We are based out of Hamilton, Ontario. It’s about an hour south of Toronto.
Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
I really enjoy it here. The music scene in and around Hamilton is amazing, it’s so diverse and there are so many excellent up an coming bands. Its nice to be a part of such a cool scene. Having a really big city like Toronto close is a big plus. That’s where all the big bands go and it allows us to more easily play for and reach more people than we otherwise would.
Q: What are you currently working on?
We are currently finishing up writing for our new EP which we are going into the studio to record before the year is up. We’ve been writing since the moment our last EP came out so we have a lot of new material to go through. We’re really liking the new songs and can’t wait to get them out there for everyone to hear.
Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
The highlight to date would have to be our CD release party which was in February. We put the show on by ourselves which was a really cool experience. We played with some really good bands to a jam packed club. It was a great night. We’ll be planning one of those again in the not too distant future.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
Well with it more than half over were looking to put ourselves into a spot where we can make 2012 our breakout year. The main goal for the rest of 2011 is to record and release a new EP.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
You can purchase our current self titled debut EP directly from our myspace page (just follow the link at the top of the page), or you could always get one free at any of our shows. Look out for our new EP that will be out by year’s end. We’re also playing shows like crazy so check our sites for dates, we’ll be coming to a city near you very shortly. If there is anyone out there who would like us to come play your city get in touch with us we would love to come out and play for you.
