Artist Interview – Nena and the Superyeahs

Nena and the Superyeahs (NATS for short) are an Italian four-piece electro-rock band from Bergamo, near to Milan. NATS are one of our latest competition winners and we were delighted when they agreed to complete a full feature interview for Song Revelation so that we had an opportunity to share their music and experiences with you. Read on to find out about what they’ve been doing recently, who they’d potentially like to collaborate with in the future and what its like being a performing musician in Milan.

Q: If you could classify your music in a genre or a number of genres what would it be?

Our music ranges over a broad spectrum of genres and has many influences. If we had to choose only 3 we’d say: electro, pop and dance.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

We are a band which loves to bring style, energy and fun into cool danceable music. This is it. Yeah!

Q: What is your musical background?

Well, we’re very different and each one of us comes from different bands of different genres. I (Nena) grew up listening to everything played in the 50’s and 60’s. Matteo has always played in pop bands, Michele attended the conservatoire but has always been attracted by electronic sounds and experimentation. Marcello played in Reggae and cross-over bands. The common point among us is that our aim in playing music has always been “having fun”.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

2010 has been probably the hardest year for us.. After years spent working with one of the most important Italian labels we decided to go back to square one. We’re now independent and we can do something that really represent us. It has been a year of tough decisions and many changes. But now we’re pretty satisfied, since we’re gaining the first results of our hard work.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Inspiration comes from everything we’ve ever listened to and everything we’ll listen to. We like many underground bands, and also mainstream ones. We could say Madonna or Passion Pit, Kinks or Beatles, Skrillex or Diplo. Every answer would be incomplete. We’re inspired by everything that arouses our curiosity and sticks in our minds.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

There are many, we’d like to collaborate with producers like Stuart Price, or with all the band we love, such as Daft Punk, MGMT, Crystal Castles, Justice, Soulwax, Wombats. One of Matteo’s wish is to collaborate with Kele, the singer of Bloc Party. Even playing with mainstream pop-star such as Gwen stefani or Katy Perry wouldn’t be bad..

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

I (Matteo) am listening to the album “With Love and Squalor” by “We Are Scientist”. Nena is listening for the hundred-thousandth time to the white album of The Beatles.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

We start with a hummed melody, not necessarily the one of the voice, then we write lyrics according to the moods that that melody leads us to, and that sound good with it.  After that we arrange the song, focusing on one idea and making it complete.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

We think that one makes the other complete. Like Good and Evil.

Q: Where are you based?

We’re Italian, and we live in Bergamo, not far from Milan.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Being musician in Italy means that you have to learn how to do it alone, and make an effort to find out things you like and that can make you grow artistically. There’s nothing close at hand, as it probably is in other countries.

Q: What are you currently working on?

We’re working on our new EP,that will be probably released by a Swedish label. We’re working on remixes with a parallel project called ChokoDiscoManiac and we’re producing some Italian bands.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Well, I think it is the day we won the national competition “operation soundwave @ MTV”, That allowed us to play on an awesome stage in Rome before “the Cure”, sign with the most important Italian Label and became “professional”. That is from the “official” point of view. Instead, the emotional highlight was during our summer tour in 2009, in Sicily, playing on a huge stage on the beach, with thousand of people dancing to our music and crowd surfing.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

Our record will be released in a short time in Europe, and we hope we’ll tour all around Europe again. Playing abroad is always a wonderful experience and we’ have great memories about our gigs out of Italy.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

We’re playing on the 1st of September in an important musical festival in Trescore, as opening act for “Planet Funk” a great Italian band, one of the best and most loved by people who likes our kind of music.

Nena and the Superyeahs (NATS) - RELAX - SINGLE

Q: What do you do to relax?

We listen to our latest single:”Relax” 😀 hehe.. Well, we’re very different one from the others, so we all have our own way of relaxing.. I (Nena) usually bake muffins or, if I’m very very stressed I go playing zombies arcade (the ones with shotgun). Matteo goes running or play silly games on his mobile.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Well, Instead we’d like them to let us know what they think about us. We think that being musicians doesn’t mean playing music for ourself, but for other peole. So we’re very interested in what they think about our music, in their opinion, judgement and criticism.. It’s a way to grow and costanly improve ourselves.. and we just love get in touch with people.

Editor’s Note: Nena and the Superyeahs uplifting brand of electro-rock is original, appealing and has a commercial edge. Definitely one of Song Revelation’s ones to watch in the coming months! Also, check out their latest album “Electric Lane” on iTunes.
