Artist Interview – Kotadama

Chris and Evan Brown are the founding members of Kotadama, an indie rock band from New South Wales, Australia. Kotadama, also consisting of Clint Fish and Scott Mallard for live shows, are starting to take the indie world by storm after having recently worked and toured in LA, London and New Zealand. We were delighted when Kotadama agreed to complete a full feature interview for Song Revelation. Read on to find out about their musical background, what they’re currently working on and their current career highlights.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Our songs are full of lush instrumentation with a compelling mix of strings, keyboards and guitars. Our lyrics include socially conscious themes and emotional interactions between people, hopefully invoking a response.

Q: What is your musical background?

Before we began playing musical instruments, we did ballroom dancing on a competitive level for ten years. I, Chris, first started to teach myself to play the guitar in late 2007 in an attempt to avoid studying for the HSC. I convinced my brother to learn the drums and we started to do covers. Once hooked, we began to compose our own music and lyrics, followed by a passion to record, mix and produce our music.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

2010 was an amazing year for us. We travelled to London to a songwriting camp that we had won in late 2009( Festival4stars), and then travelled to LA to work with David Kershenbaum. We had partnered up with him late 2009 and were now working together to produce our first album.  This was an incredible learning experience. Later in the year we travelled to Napier, New Zealand to showcase in the City Showcase. UK. We were the top two bands out of 400 entries.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

Little Bit of everything.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

The creative process usually follows one of two paths. We may start with a riff, or hook and develop this into a melody, depending on the vibe of the tune. We would the seek appropriate themes and then turn our attention to the lyrics. Alternately we are often inspired by some event, global or personal, which sets a theme, which demands appropriate lyrics and music.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Contrary to apparent trends in popular music (ie the lyrics mostly suck) we place almost equal importance on the lyrics as we do on the melody.

Q: Where are you based?

Central Coast of NSW, Australia, about one hour drive north of Sydney.

Q: What are you currently working on?

We are currently working on a number of projects, ie our second album “Moment in the Sun” and of course promoting our first single release “See You Tonight”. We are also catching up on film clip productions for some of the other songs from “Dichotomy”

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

That is a difficult one to answer. We have been fortunate enough to be invited to several countries to showcase and each experience has been amazing…..Japan, UK, US, Canada, NZ.

Our collaboration with David Kershenbaum has also been a highlight…he is a really great guy who has a wealth of information and we hope to continue working with him.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

We are working on getting exposure to build our fan base and then tour. We have been invited to tour India later in the year and have made many new contacts, worldwide, which we hope will achieve that.

Q: What do you do to relax?

We are fortunate to live on a large rural property so relaxing is easy with a glass of amber fluid and the tranquil surroundings. We also like to play tennis and get away fishing.

Editor’s Note: Kotadama have the indie pop-rock vibe down to a tee. Their ever increasing fan base and international tours indicate that 2011‘s successes will go from strength to strength.
