Artist Interview – JOANovARC

JOANovARC is an all female melodic rock band from rural Hertfordshire and London in the UK consisting of Sam Walker (Lead Vocals/Bass/Rhythm Guitar), Shelley Walker – (Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals), Laura Ozholl (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar/Bass) and Debbie Wildish (Drums). Despite being extremely busy working on their second studio album we were delighted that they took the time to complete a Feature Artist Interview for Song Revelation. Read on to find out how they create their tracks, what their current career highlight has been and what they do to relax.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

We are a female Melodic Rock Band. Our live show is exciting, electrifying and will knock you off your feet!

Q: What is your musical background?

JOANovARC was founded in 2005 by sisters Shelley and Sam Walker. The girls then met drummer Debbie Wildish who gave the band a powerful and exciting sound. JOANovARC have toured up and down Europe, the Mediterranean and Caribbean with explosive shows, electrifying audiences at the London Astoria; G3 magazine birthday at Café de paris; the Garage; The Pitz; The Barfly; summer festivals; military gigs; high profile cruise ships; Harley Davidson Chopper Show in Slovakia and at Rhythms of the World, to name but a few.

The Walker sisters previously gained support and respect from the legendary Bruce Dickinson from ‘ Iron Maiden’ when they were part of The Suffrajets. At one BBC6 Radio show, the girls met Bruce and played a few tunes leaving him flabbergasted and shouting “these girls can shred”! While performing in JOANovARC they have also got the attention and support of another rock legend Brian Howe from ‘ Bad Company’!

The girls have now expanded JOANovARC for a fresh new sound with additional members Laura Ozholl and Violet the cannibal. Last year the band got through to the Final of Live and Unsigned 2010 and performed at the London O2 and made a big impression on radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale. JoanovArc are currently promoting the release of their EP ‘Beneath the Sky’ which was out on Friday 27th May 2011 through AJR Records.

JOANovARC are true musicians and song writers who write about life experiences and the world. Music is everything to us and we love performing our live show.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

Great! We recorded our E.P with an inspirational producer, played the O2 and we developed with our new line –up.

Joan Jett or the Foo Fighters, either would be amazing!!

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

Thousands of tracks, modern and vintage. From B.B King to Muse.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

We generally store ideas on to our mobile phones, then just jam the ideas acoustically, then take the tracks to rehearsal studio, then record the track in our home studio, gig the tracks and if successful then take the track to a our favorite producer to record professionally.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Well they are just both as important as each other, but our lyrics generally tell a story and it is nice when people can remember the melody and the message.

Hertfordshire & London.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

3 of us live in the countryside, next to a farm! Our drummer lives in Chiswick by the river Thames whilst our additional percussion player lives in a transit van touring the world with other bands. She’s a bit of a swinger and joins us for big shows when she is in the U.K.
