As we enter a new year, we start to look ahead to the new faces and new possibilities in the music world. A number of bands and artists are currently under the watchful eye of the public, and some of these musicians are predicted to make their way into the spotlight and onto your radios in 2011.
Exray’s genre is hard to pinpoint, already making it a favorite for adoring fans. They gained their popularity when their song “Hesitation” made its way into The Social Network. Exray’s is scheduled to celebrate their album release Feb. 4, 2011 at Café Du Nord. Soon to follow the release are their music videos, national tour, and a slot at SXSW 2011.
Indie genre music duo Dominant Legs was listed as one of the 10 most blogged about artists on The Hype Machine. Composed of Ryan Lynch and Hannah Hunt, their debut album Young at Love was released on August 17th, 2010. There are a number of critics that favor this group and they are quickly gaining momentum, making them a good candidate for one of the top bands to watch this year. Their sound is a blend of 60’s pop and modern rock, with an eclectic spin.
According to The Hype Machine, Sufjan Stevens continues to be the most blogged about indie artist to date. Stevens is an American born musician and has definitely made his mark in the US. However, he has still yet to break into the hearts of the UK and Australia. He began his music career with bands like Marzuki and the Danielson Famile, and his first solo album was A Sun Came. His second album was Enjoy Your Rabbit, and both albums were recorded through Asthmatic Kitty Records.
The War on Drugs
The band The War on Drugs did not first start playing as on official band until 2005, the year of their first released album, Barrel of Batteries. However, Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile had been playing together since 2003. A number of accompanists shifted in and out before the band officially came together in its entirety, including Charlie Hall as the drummer and organist, Kyle Lloyd as drummer, and Dave Hartley on bass in 2008. By the end of 2008, the band was back to its two original members and was joined by Mike Zanghi, the latest drummer.
Glitter Wizard has a no holds barred approach to their music. They have a heavy rock sound and feature songs like “Black Lotus” and “Mirror Man.” Their bio lays claim that this is the kind of music you will have blaring until you are demanded to turn it down. The band is composed of Lorin Terrafor, Doug Graves, Fancee cymbals, Kandi Moon, and Wendy Stonehenge. Their debut is set for release in 2011, so keep your eyes and ears open.
