Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Out of Elgin IL, solo writer & recording artist John Balz put together over 4 albums worth of Industrial metal. Every song has its own style and character.

Q: What is your musical background?

I have a metal/ classic rock / electronic / & progressive rock background.

Q: How was 2010 for you?

2010 was spent trying to find the right bass player to complete the trio. Hopefully 2011 will solve that issue.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Al jourgenson, Rob Zombie, Les Claypool, Rush, AC/DC, Slayer, etc.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Any heavy band that can draw a crowd with which Deadnation can feed off of.

Q: What songs are on your ipod at the moment?

I don’t do Ipods

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I program all the electronic parts into the keyboard (lots of work!) either before or after the lyrics are written. I then write my guitar and bass guitar lines to match what’s on the programs (either improved around the program or right with it) .A lot of my guitar parts are ripped out on the spot depending upon what mood I’m in at that particular moment. My live drummer plays along live. After that it’s ready for studio recording.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I’m more of a violently comedic lyricist. Everything, especially the beat, lyrics, guitars, bass , & vocal effects are important in this sort of music.

Q: Where are you based?

Elgin IL

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Cold in the winter and hot in the summer. There’s nothing to special about Elgin accept that it’s 30 miles from Chicago.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m in the studio laying out 8 more of my DEADNATION master pieces, 2 of which are labeled psychedelic industrial metal. The rest are the usual funky rowdy original sounding tracks. Expect them on my myspace page by the end of February and buy the MP3s.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?

I’m hoping for the best for this band. I really think there isn’t a band out there quite like this one and it deserves special attention.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I relax by drinking 2 24oz cans of Camo Xtra High Gravity(12.2%) every night so I can get to sleep without having those constant wake me up nightmares that I get (lucid dreams that seem real).

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I’d like to let everyone know that I suffer from insanity, and that’s why DEADNATION rules this universe.

Editor’s Note: If you like electronic metal you have to check Deadnation out. Hopefully, they’ll sort out some gigs for their fans in Illinois. Bet it would be a good night!
